That’s it. You took a decision regarding your future career.
You want to become a flight attendant. A bit atypical, judging by what your family and friends told you when they heard the news. If that’s your case : hold on.. you are not alone !
Is not easy to graduate from high school still undecided about your future career. Almost as difficult as announcing to your loved ones that you fancy a job in th sky. Don’t be surprised 😮 if their initial reaction is something along the lines of : “but flight attendant is not a real job”. The truth is that the the aviation industry remains a bit mysterious for many people.
Instead of giving up on your dreams, is time to prove that you actually have your chances and you’ll manage to find a job in the industry. Unsure about where to start from ?
If this is your biggest dream, let me share with you some easy tips about how you can become a flight attendant.
Brush-up on your language skills
English is the official aviation language. However, if you wish to become a flight attendant, being fluent in English is not enough. Most of the flight attendants are fluent in 2-3 additional languages. If your mother tongue is rare, don’t forget to mention it because it can really differentiate you from other candidates during the interview.
My top tip would be to pass some exams that would certify your level on an European scale such as : TOEIC, Cambridge, DELF/DALF, DELE etc. It can cost you few hundred euros but would definitely improve your resume and show to the recruiters that you are a real asset in their crew.
2. Research 🧐 the job market
There are many different types of flight attendant. You can decide to be corporate or commercial. You can also decide to fly for a particular airline or on a particular aircraft type. It is also possible to operate on a mixed fleet. You can choose to fly on short-medium or long-haul. Many options are available to you so study each of them carefully in function of your priorities. Don’t forget that your choice will impact also your family life and the amount of time spent at home during the month.
3. Polish your resume
If you want to be successful, avoid creating long resumes. Stick to the essential points and tell only the truth. If you don’t hold any previous aviation experience or this is your first ever job, don’t be afraid of mentioning it. Recruiters will appreciate your honesty and will feel curious about meeting you in person to discuss more about your motivation to become a flight attendant.
4. Practice in front of your mirror
Most of the flight ✈️ attendant interview start by a company introduction followed by a group exercise and a self-introduction. You can start training at home in front of your mirror to lower the stress level during the actual interview. Although you will naturally feel a bit stressed, you will sound much more confident if you practiced a bit beforehand. Recruiters expect you to be a bit anxious but they also have high standards therefore they will select only the best candidates. Coming unprepared could ruin the chances of being selected.
I cannot stress enough how wearing the proper outfit can impact an interview. If you are unsure about what airlines expect you to wear during the interview, I wrote a full article regarding grooming standards.
Remember that flight attendants are expected to comply with strict standards in terms of : outfit, make-up, hairstyle and so on. Is important to show your recruiter that you are aware of all these requirements and you will comply with them from the first moment.
6. Celebrate 🎉
Now that you made it, share the good news 🗞️ with your loved ones. Remember to take a well-deserved break before starting your course. The training course will be very rewarding but also demanding 😥 so enjoy as much time off as you can before starting this amazing journey.
PS: for those of you preparing for the interview, best of luck! Don’t hesitate to ask any question you might think of - I’ll try my best to help you out.
